Tourist Attractions Danube Delta, Mahmudia, Tulcea

The Danube Delta is a place that you will fall irreparably in love with, if you are passionate about nature. It is one of the few places in Romania that has remained unaltered by the hand of man. At least until now. The apparent wilderness, the multitude of birds that live undisturbed among the reeds, the almost unnatural silence and water as far as the eye can see.

A bizarre beauty that you can taste to the fullest, an amazing destination for any lover of nature and interesting places. To see these you have to take as many boat rides as possible with the locals here, who know interesting places and stories.

The Danube Delta is a place that we must leave, as we found it (clean - please do not leave household waste).

The lakes and canals of the Danube Delta

All the lakes and canals in the Danube Delta are spectacular, with yellow and white water lilies that close in the evening and surprise you with their beauty. Here are some of the lakes you will see in the Danube Delta, at Mahmudia:

Round Lake

Lake Rotund is part of the lakes that surround Lake Gorgova. It is full of wild animals.
A cormorants have their home here, including pygmy cormorants, pelicans, egrets and birds of prey from the Danube Delta. The largest bird in Europe - the curly pelican, with a wingspan of over three meters - and the smallest - the "pantaras" weighing only 10 grams - can be found here.

Lake Cuzmintul Mare

Lake Cuzmintul Mare is a splendor of nature that you should not miss. The lake is a nesting area for birds and is full of water lilies.
From Lake Cuzmintul Mare, you can visit Lake Cuzmintul Lat with more cormorants, pelicans, egrets and, if you're lucky, swans.

Lake Gorgova

Being one of the largest lakes in the Danube Delta (13.8 km2), Gorgova Lake is one of the main tourist attractions, which you simply cannot miss. The lake is located between Bratul Sf. Gheorghe and Bratul Sulina and is surrounded by many other beautiful lakes.
It is the perfect place for fishing, both locals and tourists come here to try their luck at pike, perch, carp and catfish.

South Horsetail Lake

Lake Horse is a wonderful place. Its name, "Horseshoe", comes from its shape.
The shore of the lake is full of vegetation: reeds, gorse, willow, water lilies, thistles.
Many birds from the Danube Delta nest here, in the vegetation on the shores of the lake: swans, pelicans, cormorants, coots, wild ducks, etc.

Incinta Carasuhat

...

The story of the Carasuhat area begins somewhere in 2011, maybe even earlier. During Ceausescu's time, the Danube was dammed throughout Romania, and the course of the Sfantu Gheorghe arm was "moved" by cutting the loops and excavating sectors of the New Danube. Through the huge droughts of the 1980s and the damming of dry areas, large areas of the Delta were "returned to agriculture", as the expression was at the time. This also happened with the Carasuhat area of Mahmudia. In 2011, the project regarding the renaturalization of the Carasuhat area began. Renaturation is the initiative to give back to the Delta what agriculture "stole" in the past. At present, the fauna and vegetation have returned to the area, the renaturation being a great success.

Canalul Litcov

...

The Litcov Canal crosses the Danube Delta between Sulina and Sfantu Gheorghe, ensuring a quick connection for fishermen in the area. On its banks, you will see traditional fishermen's houses from the Danube Delta.

Letea Forest

The Letea Forest, the oldest natural reserve in Romania, is the northernmost subtropical forest in Europe.
In an exceptional place, with centuries-old trees, lianas, sand dunes and wild horses. The sand is not like the usual sand you find on the beaches in Romania, but a fine, warm, salty sand, without any stones or pieces of shells.
A place where you forget about civilization and where you would like to abandon yourself in the silence of nature.

Satul Letea

The architecture of the village preserves the local traditional architecture. The houses have blue plaster and fences painted in the same color, the roofs of the houses being made of reeds. The village seems detached from time.
Wherever you go in the village, you feel like you are on the beach. The extremely fine sand, which we see both on the streets of the village and on the dunes of the Letea Forest, comes from marine shells. Most likely, it is brought to the locality from the dunes in the forest, by the strong winds that blow in winter.

Very few people live in Letea, their number being exceeded by the wild horses that enliven the town and attract tourists to the area. In the village, we will serve lunch (optional) at a local, authentic household, where the hosts cook simple traditional fish dishes.

Sulina Beach

Sulina Beach is a quiet beach with very fine sand. The entrance to the water is smooth, without stones or shells. It is an ideal beach for families with small children or for those who do not know how to swim, because the water is very shallow.

The Observatory Lighthouse was put into operation in 1841, but currently it is not usable. It is located on the left bank of the Danube and is connected to the mainland by a stone pier. The inscriptions of those who participated in its construction are still kept on this pier. Filming was done here for the movie "Toate panzele sus".

The Greek Church of St. Nicholas is located on one of the streets near the Sulina canal and dates back to 1866.

The water tower is still in good working condition today, the exact date of construction not being known. It is interesting that the locals say that during the Second World War, the Germans wanted to blow up the tower, but they only managed to damage the upper part.

Sfantu Gheorghe

Sfantu Gheorghe beach is one of the few wild beaches by the sea, of a brutal and unmistakable beauty. It has remained so, due to the fact that it is part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve and implicitly any kind of construction is prohibited. But if you come with the trocar from the village (or simply walk the almost 2 km that separates the town from the seashore), you will find at the entrance to the beach (at least this year) some temporary constructions, where you can rent a folding deckchair, have something quick to eat (there are only fas-food products) or buy a cold drink. These are no longer available in the off-season.

In addition, if you go to the right from the entrance to the beach, along the seashore, you will reach the point where the Danube flows into the Black Sea, a place with a special charm. It is incredible how the calm waters of the Danube merge into the tumult of the sea, to give rise to some magnificent waves.

At Sfantu Gheorghe, you find Sacalin Island and lagoon - here the formation of the Delta continues through three other mini arms. You can see on the spot, the stages of the formation of a Delta.

Sacalin Island is a very important area for the migration, nesting and feeding of numerous species of deltaic birds, here you can see at any time (during the season) many species of birds (coots, fugitives, plovers, plovers, gulls, pelicans, cormorants, storks, shovelers, grebes, grebes, ducks, geese, swans, etc.). Practically, all species of birds from the Danube Delta can be found in this place, both freshwater and saltwater ones. This area can only be entered during periods of high water (spring). At Sfantu Gheorghe, you can see the wild beach and the way the Danube flows into the sea. It is wonderful to see how the waves of the sea meet with the fresh water of the Danube.

Sacalin Island is a strictly protected area and you cannot dock or disembark on it. Visiting can only be done by boat.

Caraorman Forest

Caraorman-Padurea Negra in Turkish. The Caraorman Forest is one of the northernmost subtropical forests in Europe (along with the Letea Forest).

Here you will see sand dunes, oak trees, ash alders and lianas hanging among the branches that form a path that is difficult to cross. In the middle of the forest is the "Stejarul Ingenuncheat", one of the oldest oaks in the Danube Delta, it is 30 m high, 4 m in circumference and 400 years old.
