Wetlands of Europe

Wetlands in Europe represent some of the continent's most valuable ecosystems, playing an essential role in maintaining the ecological balance. These extraordinary natural habitats contribute to biodiversity conservation, water filtration, flood control and carbon sequestration. From large river deltas to coastal marshes and lagoons, European wetlands are vital corridors for migratory birds, sheltering millions of species on their routes between Africa, Asia and northern Europe. Despite their ecological importance, many of these wetlands are threatened by human activities, climate change and pollution, making conservation efforts more important than ever.

Danube Delta, Romania

Canal in Delta Dunarii

Canal in the Danube Delta, Romania

The Danube Delta is the largest wetland in Europe and one of the best preserved deltas in the world. Designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1991, it covers an area of approximately 5,165 km2, most of which is on Romanian territory. The delta is a fascinating labyrinth of canals, lakes, swamps, reed forests and wild beaches, offering a unique habitat for an impressive diversity of flora and fauna. Over 300 species of birds live here, including the largest colonies of white pelicans and crested pelicans in Europe, cormorants, egrets, swans and numerous species of wild ducks.

One of the unique characteristics of the Danube Delta are the plaurs - floating islands made of reed roots, reeds and sediments, which move slowly on the surface of the water. These natural formations create a constantly changing landscape, of a wild and untamed beauty. The delta is also home to extraordinary subtropical forests, such as the Letea Forest and the Caraorman Forest, where centuries-old trees are adorned with lianas and wild horses run free among the sand dunes.

To discover the beauty of the Danube Delta, we recommend you take part in a Danube Delta boat trip, where you will be able to explore the spectacular canals and lakes. You can also visit Letea Forest, one of the oldest natural reserves in Romania. Birdwatching enthusiasts can opt for a birdwatching excursion, and for those who prefer peace and relaxation, we also offer fishing excursions in the Danube Delta.
