History of the Danube Delta

The Danube Delta is one of the youngest landforms in Europe, formed in the last few thousand years by the accumulation of sediments brought by the Danube River on its way to the Black Sea. This continuous process of creation and transformation has made the Delta a unique ecosystem, in a permanent evolution. From the first human settlements to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status, the history of the Danube Delta is a fascinating story about the interaction between man and nature.

Formation of the Danube Delta

Channels of the Danube Delta

The formation of the Danube Delta began approximately 10,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age, when the level of the Black Sea began to rise. The Danube, the second longest river in Europe after the Volga, annually transports approximately 67 million tons of alluvium, which is deposited at its mouths. This geological process gradually created the three main arms of the Delta: Chilia in the north, Sulina in the center and Sfantu Gheorghe in the south. The delta continues to grow even today, by approximately 40 meters per year in certain areas, being one of the few deltas in Europe that still expands naturally.

Ecology and Biodiversity

The Danube Delta is a complex mosaic of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, which hosts an extraordinary biodiversity. With an area of approximately 5165 km2, the Delta includes canals, lakes, swamps, heaths, beams, forests and beaches, each with distinct biological communities. Over 300 species of birds live here, making the Delta one of the most important ornithological areas in the world. The common pelican and the curly pelican are the symbols of the Delta, and their nesting colonies are the largest in Europe.

The waters of the Delta host 45 species of freshwater fish, including sturgeons, which are among the oldest and most endangered fish species in the world. The vegetation of the Delta is equally diverse, comprising over 1150 plant species, from the ubiquitous reeds and water lilies that cover the lakes, to the centuries-old trees in the Letea and Caraorman forests. Discover this biodiversity by participating in a birdwatching excursion or exploring the Letea Forest.

The Letea and Caraorman forests are two of the most fascinating and valuable natural areas in the Danube Delta. The Letea Forest, declared a nature reserve since 1938, is the northernmost forest with subtropical characteristics in Europe. Here, centuries-old oaks and ash trees are adorned with thick lianas, creating a landscape reminiscent of a tropical jungle. Wild horses live in the forest, descendants of domestic horses abandoned over the centuries, which have become a symbol of the wildness of the Delta.

The Caraorman Forest is distinguished by its spectacular sand dunes, which reach heights of up to 7 meters, and by its fine sand with quartz and granite particles. This forest hosts vegetation adapted to sandy conditions, including pines and oaks, and provides an important habitat for various species of reptiles and insects. Visit the Caraorman Forest to discover this unique landscape.

UNESCO Status and Conservation

In 1991, the Danube Delta was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, recognizing its exceptional value worldwide. This designation brought with it important conservation obligations and transformed the way the Delta is managed. The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (RBDD) was established to manage and protect this fragile ecosystem, establishing zones with different levels of protection: strictly protected zones, buffer zones and transition zones where human activities are allowed under controlled conditions.

Among the current conservation challenges are fishing regulation, combating poaching, managing sustainable tourism and adapting to climate change. Conservation efforts include restoration of degraded habitats, monitoring of species populations, and ecological education of local communities and visitors. Responsible tourism plays an important role in supporting conservation, providing sources of income for local communities and raising public awareness of the importance of protecting the Delta.

Delta communities

The Danube Delta is inhabited by diverse communities, with a fascinating history and culture. The Lipovans, descendants of Russian Orthodox believers who fled Russia in the 18th century to preserve their old faith, form one of the most important communities in the Delta. They settled in villages such as Mila 23, Sfistofca and Periprava, preserving their language, traditions and way of life based on fishing. The Romanian communities in the Delta have their own traditions, related to fishing, agriculture and animal husbandry, all adapted to the unique conditions of life in the middle of the waters.

The Danube Delta remains a place of wild beauty and unparalleled ecological importance, where natural and human history intertwine in a fascinating way. We invite you to discover this magical land through our excursions in the Danube Delta, where you will be able to directly experience the greatness and tranquility of this unique ecosystem in the world.
